I.C.E. "In Case of Emergency" Lori Schwartz, RN, BSN Have you ever heard of ICE? Do you have ICE contacts listed in your cell phone? Do your loved ones know about the ICE system? The ICE system was developed several years ago to help emergency care providers locate contacts for victims in a medical emergency. ICE stands for 'In Case of Emergency'. EMS personnel are trained to search a victim's cell phone for ICE contacts. ICE information usually includes your contact relatives or friends. Many cell phones have an ICE category pre-programmed, which is usually the first entry (sometimes in red) in the contacts list. Smart phones such and the Iphone, Droid, and Blackberry type devices have the capability to download applications. There are many ICE or emergency applications available for all these devices that contain detailed categories such as contacts, allergies, medications, blood type, medical/surgical history, etc. There are even companies that make ICE 'dog tags' to attach to school backpacks or bicycles in case a child is injured. We don't think about the times when this information will be needed and we may not be able to convey it to our caregivers! Now is the time to program ICE contacts in your phone and/or download an ICE application for your smart phone! If your phone doesn't have an ICE category, simply add contacts such as ICE 1, ICE 2, and so on. Please list more than one person. Many people will name their spouse as a single ICE contact, which may render useless if they are involved in an accident together. Carry an index card in your wallet with medications and pertinent medical information in your wallet or purse. The son, daughter, or neighbor ICE contact will not be able to convey this information. Help spread the word to your friends, family, and neighbors! Program your contacts today! Your life may truly depend on it! _____________________________________________
